Build The TGRF 'Official Spec' Hangar Rat!

The Hangar Rat. This rather tatty example took a gold award at the BMFA South Eastern Area Indoor Champs.

Have fun with a Hangar Rat!

We've been holding Hangar Rat competitions for a number of years now. The Hangar Rat, originally designed by Harry Barr, is built to a defined formula.

Competitors launch their models simultaneously from the ground (R.O.G.) - after the initial melee of mid-air collisions, models flying into the walls, ceiling and other flyers, the last model airborne wins! Easy huh?

We've included a free Hangar Rat plan (in two sheets), a set of instructions how to build it and a sheet of Hangar Rat mods for you to download, print off and have a go. Click on a button below and then click 'save' to save the downloaded Word file to your computer desktop. Open the saved file and print it - you may have to trim the edges slightly. The two plan sheets can then be lined up and taped together for building. Thanks to Keith Miller for supplying the plans and instructions.

Although not suitable for a first model, the Hangar Rat is not a difficult model to build and with a little care, and possibly advice, should be within the grasp of a relative beginner. (never be frightened to ask more experienced flyers for building tips). The model produced from this plan is eligible for entry into Tonbridge Gassers and Rubber Fanciers and B.M.F.A. South Eastern Area Indoor Championship Hangar Rat Competitions.... and is capable of flights in excess of two minutes!

Hangar Rat kits with plastic propellers are also available, but these are flown in a separate 'formula' to the official spec models.

Tips.

Select light balsa and Keep it light - use Jap tissue and avoid the temptation to 'beef up' the airframe!

Hangar Rat Rules.

  1. Models to be built in accordance to the plan with permitted modifications only.

  2. 18" loop of 1/8" rubber for the motor.

  3. Paddle props only - No Plastic, carved or shaped propellers.

Good Luck & Happy Landings!
